Captions for a video that has none
Snagcast is a free app for Windows and Android that makes captions from what a video says, in real time as it plays, on your device.
Open a video on a website in Snagcast, or add a video file, and turn on captions. If the video has captions of its own, Snagcast shows them. If not, it listens and writes them, in any of 100 spoken languages, and can translate them into 49. Handy when a video has no captions, when you watch with the sound off, or if you are deaf or hard of hearing.
How to
- Open the video in Snagcast: go to its website, or paste its link. A video file works too.
- Turn on captions: Captions beside the video on Windows, CC on Android.
- In the caption settings, choose the Speech model and the spoken language, or leave it to Auto-detect.
- Play the video: captions appear as it plays. Captions you made once are there at once when you watch that video again.
Speech models
- Lite: free, on every phone and computer.
- Standard: more accurate. 30 free minutes on each device, then with Snagcast Pro.
- Pro: the most accurate, and the one that also hears Cantonese. With Snagcast Pro.
Snagcast Pro is US$29.90, one payment, with no subscription.
Questions
Which languages? 100 spoken languages (Lite and Standard hear 99; Pro adds Cantonese). Captions can be translated into 49. See captions in your language.
Does it send my videos anywhere? No. The speech model is downloaded once, then captions are made on your device. Privacy says exactly what leaves your device.
Can I keep the captions? Export .srt… keeps them as a subtitle file, and a clip can have them drawn into the picture (clip with captions).
Is it accurate? Standard and Pro are the most accurate. Names and rare words can still come out wrong, so check captions you share.
